A new chip and possibly a bigger screen will help the 2022 iPad Pro show the Air who's boss
The iPad Pro didn't appear at Apple's Peek event, and that's to be expected, and if you're wondering when the new model will be released, Bloomberg's Mark Gourmet seems to have the answer.
The iPad Air 5 unveiled at the event received 5G connectivity and built-in M1 silicon, which has so far been the hallmark of the 2021 iPad Pro in terms of the best tablet of 2022.
For less than $200, the iPad Air 5 has nearly as big a screen (10.9-inch vs. 11-inch) as the 11-inch iPad Pro, the same entry-level 8GB RAM, the same basic 12-megapixel camera, and an ultra-wide front camera. 12 megapixel Middle Stage.
The smaller iPad Pro is definitely the better tablet, thanks to its slick ProMotion display, up to 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage, Face ID, dual rear camera array with optional 10MP ultra-wide module, and lidar read depth, more speakers and mmWave Faster 5G. The 12.9-inch Pro model is even better thanks to a brighter mini-LED display.
Gourmet used to say that the new iPad Pro models would last well over a year, but now he's repeating that statement and expects them to arrive somewhere this fall. The current model was announced in April last year.
He believes that Apple will complete the line for 2022 with a new M2 chip, which is apparently manufactured in a 3nm process and is said to be based on the A15 chip. The M2 is expected to feature the same octa-core processor as the M1, but may offer a more powerful 10-core GPU.
Some cosmetic changes are also visible on the card, and the plate will likely support MagSafe charging, but whether that will be enabled by the glass back or just the glass logo remains to be seen.
There's a bit of hope Apple launches a larger 15-inch model, but don't hold your breath for it. Apple currently manufactures one of the best tablets out there, and with rival Samsung taking steps to lure consumers in with features like a larger 14.6-inch screen, it makes sense for the Cupertino-based giant to fight fire with fire.
